Internships

Senator Romney offers internships for undergraduate college students. The purpose of the program is to give interns firsthand knowledge of the way in which a Senate office operates on a daily basis, to observe the legislative process at the federal level, and to develop research skills related to public policy. Preference is given to college students who are attending a Utah university and residents from Utah who are attending schools outside of the state. 

Internships are offered in the Washington, DC office, as well as the Utah offices (Salt Lake City and St. George) for the following sessions:

  • Spring: (January – May, pending Senate calendar)
    • Application deadline: October 1
  • Summer: (May – August, pending Senate calendar)
    • Application deadline: February 1
  • Fall: (September – December, pending Senate calendar)
    • Application deadline: April 1

Internship Eligibility Requirements:
•    Applicants must have a high school diploma
•    Internships are only available to current college students
•    Current law students and graduate students are eligible to apply, but should be aware that the program is geared towards undergraduate students
•    Priority is given to students who are from Utah, who attend a university in Utah, or who have other connections to Utah

Internship Responsibilities:
As an intern, some of your responsibilities may include:

  • Attending Senate hearings
  • Assisting with research on specific projects
  • Sorting and replying to constituent inquiries and mail
  • Tracking the progress of legislation
  • Meeting and interacting with constituents in the office
  • Answering telephones
  • Attending and assisting with constituent events
 

Application Process:
Applicants must submit their application form and all of the required materials to internships@romney.senate.gov by the deadlines listed above to be considered for an internship in the offices of Senator Romney. Only completed applications will be considered. Candidates selected for an interview will be contacted by their school’s internship coordinator.   • Copy of Transcript
  • Personal Mission Statement (250 words or less)
  • 2 Writing Samples
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation
 

Please compile all materials and send in one email to internships@romney.senate.gov. Letters of recommendation may be sent separately from the rest of the application materials. Recommenders can email their recommendations directly to internships@romney.senate.gov, but they still must be received by the deadlines listed above.Â
